Unsubscribe patterns worth noticing
Unsubscribe rates sit beside opens and clicks as a signal of lifecycle messaging performance, yet they are often read only as a warning light. The shape of exits across a path tells a richer story.
Cluster exits by message position and by cohort age. New contacts leaving after the first promotional ask differ from long-quiet contacts leaving after a win-back prompt. Those groups need different responses.
Watch for exits that follow a change in cadence. A sudden weekly-to-daily shift often produces a short spike that settles once the remaining audience accepts the new rhythm โ or continues rising if the cadence was simply too dense.
Do not chase a zero unsubscribe line. A healthy path still loses people who no longer need the conversation. The goal is exits that look intentional rather than startled.
Record the prompt that preceded each notable spike. Over two or three quarters you will see which asks cost attention and which simply clear the list of people who were never going to stay.
